038 - Sleepaway Camp (1983) & Summer Camp (2015) →

June 25, 2018 by Pod Sematary

CW: Attempted sexual assault of a minor; Potentially inflammatory horror trope involving an ostensibly trans person (Sleepaway Camp)

It's Summer Camp Week at Pod Sematary - that time when parents send their kids away so they can finally get some peace and quiet.

First up, Chris & Kelsey get very excited for Sleepaway Camp from 1983, a cult classic with a shocking and controversial twist ending. Go for a canoe ride and see the water snakes! Interact with the local wildlife! See if you can get a bullseye on the archery range! Enjoy our hot showers! And get to know our kind and responsible staff, like Ronnie (and his dick)!

Then it's briefly on to a bad movie with bright spots of ingenuity (or a good movie with stupid moments?), 2015's exhilaratingly titled Summer Camp! It does some cool stuff, but is that enough to save it from mediocrity?

Then it's 2016's Don't Breathe about a blind father who loses his daughter in a tragic accident. When thieves come in the night, how far over the edge will he go?

036 - Graduation Day (1981) & Dance Of The Dead (2008) →

June 11, 2018 by Pod Sematary

We wrap up Prom/Graduation season on Pod Sematary with two bad horror movies - but only one of them is GOOD bad.
First up is the Troma classic (?), Graduation Day, from 1981. It's a story with no protagonist but lots of potential villains. The murders only last 30 seconds but Gangster Rock goes for over 7 minutes!
Then it's the wildly disappointing Dance of the Dead from 2008. It's a comedy zombie flick that isn't that funny and takes forever to get to the zombies. But are there any redeeming features? (Spoiler: there's a couple?)

035 - Double Feature - Prom Night (1980 & 2008) →

June 04, 2018 by Pod Sematary in Worst of 2018

Worst of 2017/18 - #8 Prom Night (2008)

Prom season continues on Pod Sematary: Chris is sick! Kelsey's getting sick! And on the most important day of our lives!?
First up in the Prom Night Double Feature is the "way underrated" 1980 classic starring Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis. It's the movie that asks, "What if Carrie but Halloween? Plus Saturday Night Fever?" Remember kids: Be a Kim - Not a Wendy.
Then Chris gets very angry about prescription medication and then just angry in general when discussing the "fucking paint-by-numbers bullshit" 2008 sequel. The less said about this one the better, we think.

034 - Double Feature - Carrie (1976 & 2013) →

May 28, 2018 by Pod Sematary

It's prom season on Pod Sematary, folks, and Chris & Kelsey are chatting about Stephen King's Carrie! It's a double feature!

First up, of course, is the Brian DePalma classic from 1976! What happens when an isolated and terrorized young woman discovers she has power over her life after all? What happens when she's pushed too hard? Then, as spring turns to summer, so must we also discuss the "woefully unnecessary" 2013 remake, which has us asking, "Why aren't we watching Cabin in the Woods instead?"

May 21, 2018 by Pod Sematary in Best of 2018

Best of 2017/18 - #1 se7en

It's Serial Killer Week on Pod Sematary! Entirely by chance, it's also David Fincher Week, which has Chris excited because Fincher is one of his all-time favorite directors. First up is 1995's se7en, where you can hear Chris express his love for Brad Pitt (who is as an angel). Then it's on to 2007's based-on-a-true-story Zodiac, where Kelsey admits she might just die if she were in the same situation. We've got some absolute bangers this week, folks!

032 - Strait-Jacket (1964) & Mama (2013) →

May 14, 2018 by Pod Sematary

Pod Sematary celebrates Mother's Day this week by talking about some of the scariest. First up, Chris and Kelsey watch 1964's Strait-Jacket, which is just an hour and a half of heads getting chopped off and Joan Crawford running out of rooms. Then it's on to the 2013 sorta-del Toro flick, Mama, about the worst mother in the world: Jessica Chastain.

031 - Dance Macabre (1992) & Split (2016)

May 07, 2018 by Pod Sematary

CW: Mental Disorder, Child Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Potential Self Harm

Dissociative Identity Disorder is the order of the day on this week’s Pod Sematary. Chris & Kelsey talk for way too long about these surprisingly fascinating movies. 1992’s Dance Macabre asks, “What if the phantom was Freddy Kruger and the opera was a Russian ballet school?” This would be interesting enough, but then it adds, "Oh, and go ahead and throw in multiple personalities while you’re at it.” It’s an angle that adds something to the story, but is that something a good twist? 2016’s (M. Night Shyamalan’s) Split, on the other hand, astonishingly ditches the plot twist and instead explores the possibility that DID patients are the key to unlocking human potential.

029 - The Silence Of The Lambs (1991) & Memoir Of A Murderer (2017) →

April 23, 2018 by Pod Sematary in Best of 2018

Best of 2017/18 - #3 The Silence of the Lambs

This week on Pod Sematary, Chris & Kelsey Wrap up what will probably be our last Hannibal Lecter film with 1991's The Silence of the Lambs. Does it live up to the hype? Of course it does (count how many times Chris says "iconic")! Then we head overseas for 2017's Memoir of a Murderer from Korea. A serial killer has Alzheimer's and gives up the trade, but can he use his skills and fight his affliction in order stop a new killer in town and save his daughter? Man, that's still a great concept.
