237 - Hide and Go Shriek (1988) & Dead in 3 Days (2006) →

May 23, 2022 by Pod Sematary

CW: Homophobia, Transphobia, Suicide

It’s Graduation Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey celebrate their graduation by spending the night in a furniture warehouse with a killer! SHOCKING FINAL ACT TWIST: they killed another kid when they were eight!

Read our afterthoughts for this episode HERE!

The Classic Film: Hide and Go Shriek (1988)
"A group of teenagers spend the night in a furniture store for a graduation party. A psycho killer starts hunting them down one by one” (IMDb.com). An otherwise straightforward 80s slasher with some fun variations, Hide and Go Shriek's sketchy social mores are really where it lets you down.

The Modern Film: Dead in 3 Days [In 3 Tagen bist du tot] (2006)
"A peaceful mountain lake community is terrorized when a close-knit group of friends becomes the target of a mysterious deranged killer” (Vudu.com). The filmmakers here knew how to make a movie and knew what elements horror movies had, but they really didn't know how to put them all together, leaving the audience generally bored in spite of everything going on.

188 - Double Feature - The House on Sorority Row (1982) & Sorority Row (2009) →

May 31, 2021 by Pod Sematary

CW: Stillbirth, Rape, Homophobia

It’s Graduation Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey unwillingly participate in a prank gone wrong and now they have to throw a party while being stalked by a killer with a poorly-obfuscated identity!

Read our afterthoughts for this episode here!

The Classic Film: The House on Sorority Row (1982)
"After a seemingly innocent prank goes horribly wrong, a group of sorority sisters are stalked and murdered one by one in their sorority house while throwing a party to celebrate their graduation” (IMDb.com). The House on Sorority Row is not thrilling, it's not scary, and it isn't even that interesting aside from a few moments in the final act. It isn't bad, but it's certainly not good either.

The Modern Film: Sorority Row (2009)
"A group of sorority sisters try to cover up the death of their house-sister after a prank gone wrong, only to be stalked by a serial killer” (IMDb.com). One mo' 'gain! Second verse is different from the first (but not by much)!

138 - Double Feature - Night of the Demons (1988 & 2009) →

June 01, 2020 by Pod Sematary

CW: Suicide, Rape

Read our afterthoughts for this episode here!

It’s (not) Graduation Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey *would* have been watching graduation movies this week, but since there seem to be no ceremonies this year, we’ll watch teenagers have parties they shouldn't be having instead!

The Classic Film: Night of the Demons (1988)
"Ten teenagers party at an abandoned funeral parlor on Halloween night. When an evil force awakens, demonic spirits keep them from leaving and turn their gathering into a living Hell” (IMDb.com). This B-movie was surprisingly fun, despite (or because of?) a complete lack of commitment to lore or reason.

The Modern Film: Night of the Demons (2009)
"A group of kids go to a Halloween party, only to have to face down a group of demons” (IMDb.com). Same thing; different day. This second attempt added some promising lore, but it has the absolute stank of post-2000 horror remake all over it.

087 - Thesis (1996) & Kill Me Please (2015) →

June 03, 2019 by Pod Sematary

CW: Suicide, Torture, Graphic Discussion of Rape and Murder

It’s the end of another school year on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey are getting intellectual with two horror movies about school that you have to read!

The Classic Film: Thesis [Tesis] (1996)
"While doing a thesis about violence, Ángela finds a snuff video where a girl is tortured [to] death. Soon she discovers that the girl was a former student in her [college]" (IMDb.com). This 90s foreign classic comes to us from Spain and asks the important question: "Should filmmakers strive to give audiences what they want when what they want is violence?"

The Modern Film: Kill Me Please [Mate-me Por Favor] (2015)
"Barra da Tijuca, West Side Zone of Rio de Janeiro. A wave of murders plague the area. What starts off as a morbid curiosity for the local youth slowly begins to spoil away at their lives. Among them is Bia, a fifteen-year-old girl. After an encounter with death, she will do anything to make sure she's alive" (IMDb.com). This Brazilian/Argentine festival darling has a lot to say about growing up as a young woman in the modern day. But is its dreamlike beauty and emotional metaphor enough to make up for a lack of… anything else?

036 - Graduation Day (1981) & Dance Of The Dead (2008) →

June 11, 2018 by Pod Sematary

We wrap up Prom/Graduation season on Pod Sematary with two bad horror movies - but only one of them is GOOD bad.
First up is the Troma classic (?), Graduation Day, from 1981. It's a story with no protagonist but lots of potential villains. The murders only last 30 seconds but Gangster Rock goes for over 7 minutes!
Then it's the wildly disappointing Dance of the Dead from 2008. It's a comedy zombie flick that isn't that funny and takes forever to get to the zombies. But are there any redeeming features? (Spoiler: there's a couple?)
