239 - Damien: Omen II (1978) & Devil (2010) →

June 06, 2022 by Pod Sematary

CW: Suicide, Alcoholism

It’s the Devil's Day on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey read their bibles because what else are they going to do locked in this elevator?

Read our afterthoughts for this episode HERE!

The Classic Film: Damien: Omen II (1978)
"Damien the Antichrist, now about to turn thirteen years old, finally learns of his destiny under the guidance of an unholy disciple of Satan. Meanwhile, dark forces begin to eliminate all those who suspect the child's true identity” (IMDb.com). This sequel to the incredible original is better than you might have anticipated, but there's not a lot of meat on the bones.

The Modern Film: Devil (2010)
"A group of people are trapped in an elevator and the Devil is mysteriously amongst them” (IMDb.com). M. Night Shyamalan co-produced this bottle episode of a movie about the devil on an elevator, and it's better than his track record at the time might have suggested. But it wasn't good enough to get a Night Chronicles Part Two.

216 - Angel Heart (1987) & Midnight Kiss (2019) →

December 27, 2021 by Pod Sematary

CW: Sexual Assault, Rape, Incest

It’s New Year's Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey spend the last show of the year looking for someone to kiss at midnight.

Read our afterthoughts for this episode here!

The Classic Film: Angel Heart (1987)
"A private investigator is hired by a man who calls himself Louis Cyphre to track down a singer named Johnny Favorite. But the investigation takes an unexpected and somber turn” (IMDb.com). Mickey Rourke gets really melodramatic in probably one of his best roles opposite a Robert De Niro the likes of which you've likely never seen before. Angel Heart doesn't really stick the landing, but it's a beautiful and troubling movie.

The Modern Film: Midnight Kiss (2019)
"Midnight Kiss follows a group of longtime gay best friends and their straight female bestie as they head to a beautiful desert home to celebrate New Year's Eve. One of their annual traditions is to play a game called Midnight Kiss... [but] the group faces another challenge when a sadistic killer wants in on the game” (IMDb.com). Part of Hulu's Into the Dark series of holiday horror movies, Midnight Kiss does what no other movie in the series we've seen so far has been able to do and actually delights us.

085 - Rawhead Rex (1986) & Constantine (2005) →

May 20, 2019 by Pod Sematary

CW: Suicide, Mental Illness

It’s Man vs. Demon Week on Pod Sematary as Chris and Kelsey discuss two films about regular ol’ human dudes taking on the un-killable spawn of hell! But be sure not to underestimate the ladies in these stories, as they may be more powerful than they’re given credit for!

The Classic Film: Rawhead Rex (1986)
"Ireland will never be the same after Rawhead Rex, a particularly nasty demon, is released from his underground prison by an unwitting farmer” (IMDb.com). Clive Barker famously dislikes this production of one of his many screenplays, and for good reason, but maybe… just maybe… it wasn’t that great a concept to begin with?

The Modern Film: Constantine (2005)
"Supernatural detective John Constantine helps a policewoman prove her sister's death was not a suicide, but something more” (IMDb.com). An underrated comic book movie to be sure, Constantine is basically John Wick in tone, concept, and lead actor, but with demons thrown in for good measure.

Plus! Kelsey questions the origins of the Christian faith and Chris talks too much about comic books!

February 25, 2019 by Pod Sematary

CW: Suicide

It's another Double Feature on Pod Sematary! This week, Chris & Kelsey discuss that all-time satanic classic, The Omen!

The Classic Film: The Omen (1976)
Mysterious deaths surround an American ambassador. Could the child that he is raising actually be the Antichrist? The Devil's own son? Spoilers: Yes!

The Modern Film: The Omen (2006)
An American official realizes that his young son may literally be the Devil incarnate. Like this description, it retells the original story with only a vague understanding as to why.

060 - The Devil's Rain (1975) & Hereditary (2018) →

November 26, 2018 by Pod Sematary

CW: miscarriage, death of a child, threats of suicide, suicide

Oh, my god! It's a week of demonic family curses on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey cover two movies all about satanic cults afflicting generations of troubled families!

First up is 1975's The Devil's Rain! Ernest Borgnine plays a satanic cult leader determined to get a book of names from William Shatner and Tom Skerritt's family. What is the Devil's Rain and how does it factor into everything? Who knows!? But the melting effects are awesome!

Then it's on to the arty powerhouse from this year, 2018's Hereditary! Kelsey wasn't so charmed the first time around when we talked non-spoilers in episode 039 -- will a second viewing reveal the remarkable impact of this powerful family drama... horror... drarror? Horma? (Spoilers: Yes!)

Plus we give our non-spoilery thoughts on the Suspiria remake! That movie was something!
