CW: Suicide, Mental Illness

Worst 2017/18 - #9 Antisocial

Happy New Year, Pod Sematary Fossors! Chris & Kelsey are celebrating two weeks of New Year's horror "fun"!

First up is a New Year's classic we've seen before an totally forgot about if that tells you anything: 1980's New Year's Evil! Famous New Wave DJ Blaze is hosting a rocking celebration on the last night of the year! Meanwhile, a killer calling himself "Evil" is on the prowl murdering women every time it strikes midnight across the various time zones of the contiguous United States.

Then it's on to a movie with "a lot to say," 2013's Antisocial! This is a horror movie that thinks it's high-minded commentary on our society's connection to technology and social media. "Thinks" is the operative word here...

Plus, a Pod Sematary Year* in Review(s)!
--Our bottom ten lowest reviewed movies!
--The ten biggest disagreements with the "critical consensus"!
--Our top ten highest reviewed movies!
--The ten biggest discrepancies between Chris' and Kelsey's ratings!

059 - Home Sweet Home (1981) & Kristy (2014)

November 19, 2018 by Pod Sematary in Worst of 2018

Worst of 2017/18 - #6 Home Sweet Home

It's Thanksgiving on Pod Sematary this week! Chris and Kelsey watch two completely different slashers (if you can call them that) all centered around the most gratitude-filled of holidays here in the States.

First up is 1981's Home Sweet Home, a delightful and dreadful little romp that has more in common with Alien(s) than you might expect! Marvel as a homicidal lunatic all hopped up on goofballs leaps at his victims from just off-screen! An extended "family" gathers in a wooded homestead to celebrate Thanksgiving, and maybe just kill each other before the villain gets to them! (Wocka Wocka!)

Then it's on to the little-known Kristy from 2014! Thanksgiving is the reason Justine (no, not Kristy) is all alone on her college campus, and she'll really need to show what she's made of to survive being hunted by homicidal internet trolls. This one is both wonderful and frustrating in equal measure! What's the whole point of it all? We're not really sure even the movie itself knows!

055 - Double Feature - 13 Ghosts (1960) & Thir13en Ghosts (2001) →

October 22, 2018 by Pod Sematary in Worst of 2018

CW: Rape

Worst of 2017/18 - #5 Thir13en Ghosts (2001)

It's round two on Dark Castle Double Features this week on Pod Sematary! Chris and Kelsey go back to the same William Castle well as The House on Haunted Hill with Thirteen Ghosts! And stick around at the end of the episode for our thoughts on 2018's Halloween!

First up is the 1960 original, 13 Ghosts! Ghosts come to life with the ectoplasmic color of Illusion-O (ectoplasm only comes in red or blue)! Imagine 1959's House on Haunted Hill but without the intrigue and without Vincent Price... it's fine... it's fine.

But, then... oh, then... there's the 2001 Dark Castle remake, Thir13en Ghosts. A movie so batshit crazy that Matthew Lillard is the only one that can see it for what it really is: an ironic comedy.

042 - Carnival Of Souls (1962) & Closed For The Season (2010) →

July 23, 2018 by Pod Sematary in Worst of 2018

CW: Sexual Assault, Rape (Because of course...)

Worst of 2017/18 - #4 Closed for the Season

It's Fair Week on Pod Sematary! Kelsey is a big fan of fairs, but will she still be by the end of this episode? (Hint: Yes.)

First is 1962's Carnival of Souls, a classic psychological horror that may have influenced more in the genre than you think. But just because it did some things first, does that mean it did them well?

Oh, but the real star of this episode is 2010's Closed for the Season, which prompted Chris to shout, "Kelsey, what did you DO!?" The "And Then" nightmare is the worst we've had in a while and Chris has never been angrier. You may want to turn the volume down in this half of the episode.

035 - Double Feature - Prom Night (1980 & 2008) →

June 04, 2018 by Pod Sematary in Worst of 2018

Worst of 2017/18 - #8 Prom Night (2008)

Prom season continues on Pod Sematary: Chris is sick! Kelsey's getting sick! And on the most important day of our lives!?
First up in the Prom Night Double Feature is the "way underrated" 1980 classic starring Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis. It's the movie that asks, "What if Carrie but Halloween? Plus Saturday Night Fever?" Remember kids: Be a Kim - Not a Wendy.
Then Chris gets very angry about prescription medication and then just angry in general when discussing the "fucking paint-by-numbers bullshit" 2008 sequel. The less said about this one the better, we think.

CW: Abortion

Worst of 2017/18 - #10 April Fools

Happy Easter, everyone! This week, Chris and Kelsey do absolutely nothing for Easter and instead focus on April Fool's Day! There are a handful of horror movies themed around this "holiday" and we picked the best and the absolute worst for this episode. First up is the classic from the 80s era that tried to cash in on the Halloween and Friday the 13th holiday horror craze, 1986's April Fool's Day! Find out which characters f**k on the first date! Then it's on to the absolutely abysmal April Fools from 2007 (featuring Li'l Flip!) that we stumbled on several years ago completely by accident and could never get out of our minds. I know I say I refused to buy this movie but, sadly, I had to in order to capture audio... my iTunes movie library is a wasteland.

Worst of 2017/18 - #3 Red Clover

The St. Patrick's Day Holiday Fortnight continues on Pod Sematary with some lepreCARNAGE! First up is the kid's horror movie-cum-adult schlockfest, Leprechaun (1993), starring Jennifer Aniston and Francis from Pee-wee's Big Adventure! Then... oh, then... it's the Sci-Fi (SyFy?) Original™, Red Clover (2012), starring Cool Dude™ Billy Zane and his heart-wrenching story of Black Friday tragedy! We lose our damn minds over this one, folks, and we don't even mention the fact that the "leprechaun" kills a guy by running him over with a car.

Worst of 2017/18 - #1 (Tied) X-Ray

Warning: Do not watch X-Ray. Or whatever - we're not the boss of you. In this week's episode of Pod Sematary, Chris and Kelsey HATE a movie that some people seem to love for some reason: 1980's X-Ray (AKA Hospital Massacre; AKA Ward 13; AKA Be My Valentine... Or Else!). If you are one of those people, first seek professional help, but then write us to let us know WHY. Then it's on to 2001's Valentine with David Boreanaz, a revenge slasher that Kelsey remembers from her middle school days and Chris doesn't remember at all.

January 08, 2018 by Pod Sematary in Worst of 2018

Worst of 2017/18 - #1 (Tied) Life Blood

Friends, this episode has the worst movie we've reviewed so far. Frankly, it's incredible just how bad it is. Chris and Kelsey take a trip in the way back machine to review the influential, silent, Swedish classic, 1921's The Phantom Carriage. Then... well, then there's 2009's Life Blood about holy lesbian vampires. Folks, don't bother watching this ahead of time; we'll tell you all you need to know about this festering garbage fire.

It's that time of year again: chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose, and just a metric ton of awful things happening to eyeballs. This week's Double Feature has us re-watching one of our all-time seasonal horror favorites and its simply god-awful remake. It's Black Christmas time!
