One classic. One modern. All horror.

One couple talking about old and new horror movies, because of course.

It’s Stephen King Sequels Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey shine on in a field of nothing but stupid, old corn.

The Classic Film: Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice (1992)
"A journalist and his son travel to Nebraska to investigate the mysterious town of Gatlin where, unbeknownst to them, a murderous cult of children are still waiting in the cornfields” (IMDb.com). This is not a good sequel, but we were surprised by just how much fun we had watching it.

The Modern Film: Doctor Sleep (2019)
"Years following the events of The Shining, a now-adult Dan Torrance must protect a young girl with similar powers from a cult known as The True Knot, who prey on children with powers to remain immortal” (IMDb.com). Doctor Sleep has the unenviable job of walking the tightrope between following on from Kubrick's version of The Shining and staying faithful to the King books, but it manages to pull it off with aplomb.

It’s a franchise wrap-up week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey watch the last two movies in iconic franchises they’ve covered on the show before!

The Classic Film: Army of Darkness (1992)
"A man is accidentally transported to 1300 A.D., where he must battle an army of the dead and retrieve the Necronomicon so he can return home” (IMDb.com). Ash is at his absolute most Ash in this final film installment in the original Evil Dead franchise, all of which (and even the 2013 remake) ended up being pretty great.

The Modern Film: Pet Sematary (2019)
"Dr. Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, relocate from Boston to rural Maine with their two young children. The couple soon discover a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home” (IMDb.com). Chris has softened on this double-adaptation since they first discussed it in episode 80, but both hosts still feel like almost every change from the source material was the wrong one.

Plus! Our mild-spoiler thoughts on The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep!

100 - Double Feature - The Shining (1980 & 1997) →

September 02, 2019 by Pod Sematary in Best of 2019

CW: Alcoholism, Child Abuse, Spousal Abuse, Filicide, Suicide

Best of 2019 - #8 The Shining (1980)

It’s our 100th episode on Pod Sematary! And a Double Feature! Chris & Kelsey watch one of the greatest horror movies of all time based on one of the greatest books written by one of the greatest horror authors of all time! And then we see the 4 1/2 hour miniseries adaptation that the King likes better!

The "Original": The Shining (1980)
"A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future” (IMDb.com). Stanley Kubrick made what is, in Chris' opinion, his best film with The Shining, but how many points does it lose for being a notoriously bad adaptation?

The "Remake": Stephen King's The Shining (1997)
"A recovering alcoholic must wrestle with demons within and without when he and his family move into a haunted hotel as caretakers” (IMDb.com). ABC's miniseries is much more faithful to the book, having been written by the man himself, but does its accuracy hurt its potential as good television?

089 - Wait Until Dark (1967) & Hush (2016)

June 17, 2019 by Pod Sematary

CW: Ableism, Sexual Assault

It’s another Home Invasion Week on Pod Sematary! This time both films Chris & Kelsey are watching star “champion" heroines with disabilities!

The Classic Film: Wait Until Dark (1967)
"A recently blinded woman is terrorized by a trio of thugs while they search for a heroin-stuffed doll they believe is in her apartment" (IMDb.com). Audrey Hepburn cranks up the melodrama opposite a very creepy, young Alan Arkin in this influential classic, and what seems like a simple heist drama quickly turns to horror when a convoluted plan gets out of hand.

The Modern Film: Hush (2016)
"A deaf and mute writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window" (Netflix). Horror super-couple Mike Flanagan (writer/director) and Kate Siegel (writer/actress) are at it again with a pretty fantastic bottle-movie that manages to reinvigorate what has lately been a tired subgenre.

Plus!
—The first trailer for Doctor Sleep, a movie that somehow manages to be a sequel to both the Shining film AND book!?
—A re-remake of Black Christmas announced via poster?
