One classic. One modern. All horror.

One couple talking about old and new horror movies, because of course.

150 - The Seventh Victim (1943) & Mandy (2018) →

CW: Suicide (multiple references and lengthy discussion)

It’s Nightmare Cult Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey leave their boarding school and fall in with backwoods biker cenobites on LSD.

The Classic Film: The Seventh Victim (1943)
"A woman in search of her missing sister uncovers a Satanic cult in New York's Greenwich Village, and finds that they may have something to do with her sibling's random disappearance” (IMDb.com). More complex, odd, and baffling than you might expect a 1940s mystery to be, The Seventh Victim packs more plot developments and intrigue into its 70 minutes than a le Carré espionage novel.

The Modern Film: Mandy (2018)
"The enchanted lives of a couple in a secluded forest are brutally shattered by a nightmarish hippie cult and their demon-biker henchmen, propelling a man into a spiraling, surreal rampage of vengeance” (IMDb.com). (Gestures wildly at everything.)

121 - Double Feature - The Wicker Man (1973 & 2006) →

CW: PTSD, Death of a child

It’s a Gaslight Double Feature on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey don’t know what to believe this week, including whether Nicolas Cage’s hilarious acting is intentional or not.

The Classic Film: The Wicker Man (1973)
"A puritan Police Sergeant is sent to a Scottish island village in search of a missing girl who the townsfolk claim never existed; stranger still are the pagan rites that take place there” (IMDb.com). The little old police sergeant goes 'round and 'round. Always the same way, y'see, until it ends up right up tight to the nail. Poor old thing.

The Modern Film: The Wicker Man (2006)
"A sheriff investigating the disappearance of a young girl from a small island discovers there's a larger mystery to solve among the island's secretive, neo-pagan community” (IMDb.com). Basically, this is the first movie again but turned up to 11 and with humor (possibly?), mental disturbance, action, acting “choices,” and personal stakes thrown in. Not many people really like it, but even if you do, you can see why.

095 - Vampire's Kiss (1988) & The Voices (2014) →

July 29, 2019 by Pod Sematary

CW: Rape, Sexual Assault, Mental Disorders, Suicide

It’s Homicidal Delusions Week on Pod Sematary! Chris begins to suspect that Kelsey may just be in his head as they watch two films about men who are a little confused about reality and make the women in their lives suffer for it.

The Classic Film: Vampire's Kiss (1988)
“After an encounter with a neck-biter, a publishing executive thinks that he's turning into a vampire" (IMDb.com). Nicolas Cage is at his cagiest in this flick that stumbles in the middle with its severe treatment of Maria Conchita Alonso but manages to make up for it with it’s fantastic meme-ness… for some...

The Modern Film: The Voices (2014)
“A likable guy pursues his office crush with the help of his... talking pets, but things turn sinister when she stands him up for a date” (Lionsgate). Ryan Reynolds gives the performance of his career (i.e., he doesn’t just play a sarcastic version of himself) and manages to be both likable and terrifying… at least more terrifying than in the Amityville Horror remake.
