CW: Harm to Children

The Best of 2021 - #10 Coraline

It’s Wholesome Horror Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey ride the carousel backward and enjoy absolutely terrific horror movies made for kids to kick off October! This time, both movies are about evil entities posing as things kids tend to love in order to feed on their souls.

Read our afterthoughts for this episode here!

The Classic Film: Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)
"In a small American town, a diabolical circus and its demonic proprietor prey on the townsfolk” (IMDb.com). Ray Bradbury's script adaptation of his own novel is yet another 80s film that Disney seems content to forget about, but impeccable writing and a great performance by Jonathan Pryce make this movie a must-watch during the Halloween season.

The Modern Film: Coraline (2009)
"An adventurous 11-year-old girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets” (IMDb.com). Full disclosure: We are a Gaiman-loving household. But beyond the story, Coraline is a beautiful and disquieting stop-motion feat and possibly Laika's best.

194 - Pitch Black (2000) & The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) →

July 19, 2021 by Pod Sematary

It’s Riddick Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey shave their heads and wear welding goggles because Richard B. Riddick is their hero.

Read our afterthoughts for this episode here!

The Classic Film: Pitch Black (2000)
"A commercial transport ship and its crew are marooned on a planet full of bloodthirsty creatures that only come out to feast at night. But then they learn that a month-long eclipse is about to occur” (IMDb.com). Pitch Black tries real hard to balance between horror, sci-fi, and action, but it mostly just succeeds in being badass.

The Modern Film: The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)
"The wanted criminal Richard Bruno Riddick (Vin Diesel) arrives on a planet called Helion Prime and finds himself up against an invading empire called the Necromongers, an army that plans to convert or kill all humans in the universe” (IMDb.com). The Chronic-WHAT!?-cles of Riddick leaves much of the horror of Pitch Black behind in favor of existential dread, lore-building, and more ego-stroking, but that doesn't mean it isn't totally radical.

077 - They Live (1988) & Signs (2002) →

March 25, 2019 by Pod Sematary

CW: Antisemitism, Racism, Mass Shooting

The aliens have invaded Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey discuss two films with radically different perspectives during an alien invasion!

The Classic Film: They Live (1988)
"A drifter discovers a pair of sunglasses that allow him to wake up to the fact that aliens have taken over the Earth" (IMDb). Can a fight scene go on TOO long? Can a man be TOO rowdy? Can a Keith be TOO David? The answer to all of these questions is "Hell no."

The Modern Film: Signs (2002)
"A family living on a farm finds mysterious crop circles in their fields which suggests something more frightening to come" (IMDb). One of Shyamalan's "Good Ones," this movie proves that, in capable hands, a story about a family in mourning can be more compelling than the alien invasion during which it's set.

Plus:
--Supernatural Check-In!
--WAY too much wrestling!
--Nazi Punks Fuck Off!
--Two separate Harry Potter references!
--R.I.P. Larry Cohen!
