The Classic Film: The New Kids (1985)
"A brother and sister arrive in a small town to help their relatives run an amusement park, and they find the town is terrorized by a local street gang” (IMDb.com). Lots of people would love to be the coolest, strongest, most righteous guy in their school. Loren McWilliams is that guy, and the punks at his new school have just given him an excuse to kick butt. The New Kids may be a little silly, but it can also be extremely intense, mainly due to some terrible assault and the fine acting of a young James Spader.

The Modern Film: The Purge (2013)
"A wealthy family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legal” (IMDb.com). The Purge is a simple premise that many dismiss as puerile, but its politics are worth dissecting to get beneath the heavy-handed surface.

103 - Double Feature - Children of the Corn (1984 & 2009) →

CW: Child Abuse, Rape

It’s Child Cult Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey blaspheme against He Who Walks Behind the Rows this week, probably because they’re well past the age of favor.

The "Original": Children of the Corn (1984)
"A young couple is trapped in a remote town where a dangerous religious cult of children believe everyone over the age of 18 must be killed” (IMDb.com). This “original” adaptation of Stephen King’s short story takes quite a few liberties, but more often than not, these changes end up as beloved moments in 80s horror. But is it actually as scary and Chris and Kelsey remember?

The “Remake”: Children of the Corn (2009)
"While traveling, an unhappy married couple encounter a cult of murderous children who worship an entity called He Who Walks Behind the Rows” (IMDb.com). This version is much more faithful to the original story, much to its detriment. King’s overly hysterical dialogue doesn’t play so well when it doesn’t have the benefit of being broken up by his fascinating prose.

Plus! We discuss the original short story and the actual first adaptation: 1983 short film Disciples of the Crow!

097 - The Return of the Living Dead (1985) & Shaun of the Dead (2004) →

CW: Brief references to rape, child abuse, and filicide

Best of 2019 - #9 Shaun of the Dead

It’s Zed-Word Week on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey tackle two comedy zombie flicks (combies? zomedies?) with varying results!

The Classic Film: The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
“When two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies” (IMDb.com). If you ever thought Chris and Kelsey were broken on the inside, their opinions on this cult classic that’s seemingly beloved by everyone probably won’t help.

The Modern Film: Shaun of the Dead (2004)
“A man's uneventful life is disrupted by the zombie apocalypse.” (IMDb.com). Do you ever think about what the Edgar Wright Ant-Man would have been like? Chris does. Kind of a lot.
