235 - Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985) & Scream (2022) →

May 12, 2022 by Pod Sematary

It’s Friday the 13th on Pod Sematary! Time for the fifth entry in both the Friday and Scream franchises! This week, Chris & Kelsey hallucinate famous killers and, by the end, become the killers themselves.

Read our afterthoughts for this episode here!

The Classic Film: Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985)
"Still haunted by his past, Tommy Jarvis, who, as a child, killed Jason Voorhees, is sent to a secluded halfway house in the countryside, where the killing of a young man triggers a brutal series of murders in the area” (IMDb.com). The franchise has abandoned even Jason Voorhees in favor of a new killer and a plethora of f-bombs and tits, but we'll be damned if it's not still a little entertaining.

The Modern Film: Scream (2022)
"25 years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, Calif., a new killer dons the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past” (IMDb.com). The self-referential style of Scream has now folded in on itself and even the meta is meta. The fifth installment hasn't brought the franchise to ruin without Wes Craven—in fact, there's a lot to like here—but the execution leaves much to be desired.

222 w/ Bob - The Lost Boys (1987) & Bloodsucking Bastards (2015) →

February 07, 2022 by Pod Sematary

It’s Vampire Week on Pod Sematary! Chris, Kelsey, and special guest Bob fill some squirt guns with holy water and take in a Tim Cappello concert on the beach.

Read our afterthoughts for this episode here!

The Classic Film: The Lost Boys (1987)
"After moving to a new town, two brothers discover that the area is a haven for vampires” (IMDb.com). We absolutely adore this movie and for good reason. It just so perfectly exemplifies a specific style from a specific time that makes Kelsey say, "They were right in the 80s."

The Modern Film: Bloodsucking Bastards (2015)
"A down-on-his-luck cubicle worker and his slacker best friend discover their new boss is a vampire who is turning their coworkers into the undead.” (IMDb.com). Bloodsucking Bastards is a terrific comedy trapped in the shell of a fairly okay movie. It's certainly not what you might call a great movie, but the moments where it approaches perfection make it worth your time.

197 - Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) & Fear Street: Part One - 1994 (2021) →

August 10, 2021 by Pod Sematary

CW: Suicide, Overdose, Homophobia

It’s Friday the 13th on Pod Sematary! Chris & Kelsey shave their heads, apply a very stylish smoky eye, and just go ham with a machete on a corpse. And all with a kickass 90s soundtrack.

Read our afterthoughts for this episode here!

The Classic Film: Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
"After being mortally wounded and taken to the morgue, murderer Jason Voorhees spontaneously revives and embarks on a killing spree as he makes his way back to his home at Camp Crystal Lake” (IMDb.com). Well, this is it. He finally bites it. While it absolutely isn't the last we'll see of Jason, The Final Chapter is the end of the Friday the 13th franchise as we know it. It's pretty much all downhill from here.

The Modern Film: Fear Street: Part One - 1994 (2021)
"A circle of teenage friends accidentally encounter the ancient evil responsible for a series of brutal murders that have plagued their town for over 300 years. Welcome to Shadyside” (IMDb.com). Part One of Netflix's and R.L. Stine's Fear Street Trilogy sets things off with a bang in a teen horror that was better than we thought it was going to be, despite its perhaps overly effusive celebration of the 90s—a decade that, we must stress, we love very much.

069 - The 'Burbs (1989) & Slither (2006) →

January 28, 2019 by Pod Sematary

It's Small Town Horror Week on Pod Sematary when Chris and Kelsey discuss two movies that might be more comedy than horror!

The Classic Film: The 'Burbs (1989)
An over-stressed suburbanite and his fellow neighbors are convinced that the new family on the block are part of a murderous Satanic cult. What is it about this critical and commercial flop from Joe Dante that made it charm on home video and TV? Probably Tom Hanks... and the rest of the killer cast.

The Modern Film: Slither (2006)
A small town is taken over by an alien plague, turning residents into zombies and all forms of mutant monsters. This one may not be quite as charming as The 'Burbs, but James Gunn's Slither is certainly faster, bigger, and nastier.

064 - Gremlins (1984) & Krampus (2015) →

December 24, 2018 by Pod Sematary

CW: Suicide, Misgendering

The holiday season continues on Pod Sematary, as Chris and Kelsey tackle one of the biggest Christmas horror movies of all time and another that has the potential to become a classic!

First up is the legendary Gremlins from 1984! This franchise scared Kelsey for years as a child, but she's grown to love it since. Is it the mix of true terror and nonsensical silliness that has given this horror movie the staying power of other Christmas staples?

Then it's on to 2015's Krampus! The silliness of this one seems more at odds with its otherwise self-serious tone than in Gremlins. But will you agree with Chris that its incredible practical effects and character design from Weta Workshop go a long way to making up for any of its shortcomings?
